The gap-year has undergone a renaissance over recent years, with increasing numbers of older and professional people taking time out to see the world or do that thing they've always wanted to do, but life got in the way.
You can read more about this in our Career Breaks section, of course. The upshot is this trend is that luxury gap-years have become increasingly popular.
Luxury gappers are most likely to be those taking a year (or more, or less) out of work to recharge their batteries. We're talking about professional people, (mostly) over 50, with a burning desire to see the world and experience new countries and cultures - and with the finances to match.
That's not to say these more mature travellers are going to different destinations than the younger crowd, it's just they are looking to do it in more comfort: luxury hotels, first-class travel and bespoke activities. It's a gentler pace to a year out, less adrenalin-fueled, but with plenty of style.
Experts say that the demand for business and first class itineraries is growing at pace. And there is now a fantastic range of companies aiming to cater for luxury gappers, you can read about many of them in the listings below.
